Diagnosis: Diabetic Nephropathy
Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause
of chronic renal failure in the Western societies. It is also one of the
most significant long-term complications in terms of morbidity and mortality
for individual patients with diabetes.
Diabetic nephropathy rarely develops
before 10 years' duration of the disease, however, approximately 3% of
newly diagnosed non – insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
patients have overt nephropathy. In patients with recent diagnosis of
NIDDM, the real time evolution of the disease is unknown. Then, in patients
with recently diagnosed NIDDM and proteinuria we must think about the
possibility of renal involvement for the diabetes.
