Dr. Mario Robledo-Villegas; a recent picture.
Dr. Mario Robledo-Villegas, one of the giants of Pathology in Colombia, died on May 12, 2010, in Medellín, Colombia. Throughout his professional life as a pathologist, professor and scientist, Dr. Robledo demonstrated extraordinary insight and understanding regarding pathology; his knowledge was vast, but he had special focus on dermatopathology and pathology of infectious diseases, mainly fungal. Beyond his exceptional contributions, however, he was also an outstanding teacher and mentor, devoted to training the next generation of pathologist from many regions of Colombia and other countries in Latin America. I had the great privilege and honor of working with and learning from his and he was my most influential mentor.
Dr. Robledo was born February 2, 1927, in Amalfi, Antioquia, Colombia. He studied medicine and began his first lessons in pathology at the University of Antioquia. He graduated Master in Science in Pathology in 1956 at University of Michigan, USA; and studied Dermatopathlogy at Armed Forces Instuitute of Pathology (AFIP), Washington, in 1966.
He was an icon. He was loved and admired by so many at the University of Antioquia and other academic institutions in Medellín. He was most preferred professor at the Department of Pathology and most humorous friend in the last decades.
Many academic activities, researches, and other great achievements of the Department of Pathology, would not have been possible without his wisdom, experience and kindness. We will always be grateful to Dr Robledo.
Our hearts go out to his wife Mrs. Mery, and his sons.
